These are quick, easy, and cheap to make. They can be healthy treats depending on how you make them.
You need:
Seed mix
Egg
Optional/Ideal:
Pellets
Dried fruits or Dried veggies
Cinnamon
Safe spices
Honey (small amount)
The possible combinations of ingredients depends on what your birds like. For a sweet mix, i suggest dried fruit, cinnamon, fruity pellets, and honey. I would only add a touch of honey for flavour, as too much honey will make them too sugary to give daily.
NOTE: if you add pellets, do not add egg yolk, because the yolk is very high in protein and so are pellets. too much protein can damage the kidneys. remove the yolk from the egg whites with a spoon before mixing in the seed.
I have recently made this mix for my birds, and i did a picture tutorial to go along with this thread.
For my usual mix that is well liked by my birds, i added rosemary, cinnamon, raisons, craisons, pellets, and eggshells.
This is the tutorial:
Step one:
Place seed mix into a bowl, mix in dried fruits.
Step two:
Add in cinnamon and rosemary (can be substituted with other spices depending on preference)
Step three:
Add in pellets
Step four:
Remove yolk from egg white with spoon, gently, be careful not to break the yolk. Do this in a shallow dish. Then mix in the egg white into the seed mix. Discard the yolk.
Step five:
Mix the seed mix thoroughly, making sure the egg white coats every seed and pellet.
Step six:
The seed mix should be thick and evenly coated, not runny. If it is too runny, add more seed/pellets until the right consistency.
Step seven:
Place on baking sheet on alluminum foil with a spoon, making round "cookies" roughly 1-2 inches wide. Pat them together gently with spoon to make sure they are formed neatly. You can place seed mix inside cupcake papers for foraging fun as well.
Step eight:
Bake in oven at 375 F for 5-10 minutes, depending on your oven. Once dry and firm, the cookies are done. They should not be soft, if they are, they are not done baking. Gently remove them from pan when finished and let cool. Once cool, you can serve them to your birds. Put unused cookies into a sealed container and store in fridge.
Step nine:
Serve and let birds enjoy!!
