The Spix's macaw is (was?!) extinct in the wild and has not been seen since 2000. There are some amazing people across the globe helping to save the species by breeding them in captivity to re-establish the species. There is the Loro Parque Fundacion (Tenerife), Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots (Germany) and Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (Qatar) and two places in Brazil. I don't think there could have been more exciting news than this though... www.birdlife.org/americas/news/spix%E2%80%99s-macaw-reappears-brazilIf there is one, there may be more! I think this is fantastic news. I have not been lucky enough to see the Spix's macaw myself but was able to visit the Lear's macaws at Loro Parque a couple of years back and they are also coming on in leaps and bounds. I hope some day these species will be re-introduced without the fear of deforestation, poachers and other bad people. It would be a shame to lose such a stunning bird!

Yes! I remember hearing something like this on Facebook a couple of months ago. It made me happy. I hope they can successfully bring back the population to this endangered species. They are absolutely beautiful!
