I got Blackjack in 2011 with his mate Picasso. They came from a home where they were sharing an aviary with quite a few Indian ringnecks. Both of them had bad damage to their beaks but Picasso was worse off. Over time she got better but that's where her name came from. Her face was a little bit like a Picasso painting! They had 2 chicks together, CJ and Pebbles. In 2012, Picasso passed away due to organ failure. She went peacefully in my partners hands and Blackjack was left with his sons. Fast forward a few years and I then have a few more peach faced lovebirds. A couple were given to me and 2 more had flown into my garden. CJ and Pebbles had a very bad fight and it was too late when we got to them. Both lovebirds had passed away. They had lived together for years with no signs of aggression what so ever and it was over so fast. At this point I had had enough of the aggression that comes with keeping a flock of peachies. I rehomed the pair that nobody claimed to a young man who was very eager to have his first birds. He loves them! The other pair I had I rehomed to a friend of mine who had a very large peach faced lovebird colony that was peaceful (or as peaceful as these little terrors can be). I asked her if she would take Blackjack too because I felt sorry for him
Fast forward again to a more recent time. Blackjack has had multiple clutches of chicks with a few of the hens. Even though he's in his twenties he's still a little ladies man. He's always been a very laid back and lovely peach faced, albeit a bit sassy. My friend that has been caring for him has been sending me pictures of him since he went there and he has been having a blast. Unfortunately, she told me not long ago that she would be moving far down South and she was taking most of her flock with her. As Blackjack was supposed to be a long term foster situation she felt it would be best and fair if I had him back. I was really grateful for this. I currently keep black masked, black cheeked and Fischer's lovebirds but no peach faced. Never again with the peachies! Yesterday I went to pick him up and I couldn't be more thrilled. He's just as cheeky and as laid back as he always had been. He's never bitten me and for a parent raised aviary bird he's stupidly tame. He's loud and brash and ridiculously fun. So playful too!
He's back here now to live out the rest of his old days with myself. While I am sad that he's left his flock he does seem really happy to chill with me and listen to/watch his other lovie friends
I got some cute pics from today to share!
Welcome home little man!
