A bird owner should be aware of the risks and dangers of bringing their birds outside.
1. Birds should be on a harness or in their cage.
Birds not in a cage or harness can fly away, and there is no guarantee you will ever see your bird again if they fly away. Harnesses should be of appropriate size for your bird to make sure bird cannot escape. When walking with your bird on the harness, the bird should be held in front of your chest. It is dangerous to place the bird on your shoulder as hawks are known to come from behind and take birds on shoulders. Cages should be secure. If your bird is a known escape artist, you may want to latch their doors with a lock.
2. You must be with them at all times.
Even if your bird is in a cage, you must be out there with the bird. Hawks and other predators can still take birds, even if they are in the cage. They can reach through the bars and cause major injury to the bird or kill the bird. Hawks are highly intelligent hunters and very resourceful. They are also very determined and a caged bird is easy prey.
3. Even a clipped bird can fly away.
A clipped bird can bolt away in seconds. All it takes is the right conditions and the bird is gone. Also, even if a clipped bird flies and only lands across the yard, you are not there fast enough to stop an unexpected predator such as a cat or a hawk from taking the clipped bird. Please only keep your bird on a harness and leash or in its cage. It is a big misunderstanding that clipped birds cannot fly.
