A healthy bird will have bright clear eyes, smooth plumage, will be active, clean, and will have a clean vent, clean nostrils, and will be round chested and have normal droppings.
Signs of an ill bird may include:
Abnormal droppings (please see sticky thread "Droppings Reference Guide" for photo references) Fluffed up Leaning over perch, head resting on chest, both feet on perch, laboured breathing. Unsteady perching. Swaying on perch. Limping. Droopy wings. Discharge from nostrils and eyes. Bleeding. Bald spots. Excessive itching. Voice change. Gasping for breath. Tail bobbing. Dirty vent. Sleeping at bottom of the cage. Lethargy. Lack of appetite. Vomiting. Lack of interest in anything. Wheezing Clicking when breathing. Sores on feet, beak, face, etc. Over grown beak and nails. If your bird acts differently suddenly and seems off, there may be something wrong.
Keep a close eye on your bird's droppings as if there is a problem, the droppings will be the first thing to tell you.
If purchasing a bird, take a look at the droppings on the cage floor for any abnormalities. Also look not only at the bird you are interested in but its cagemates as well. If one of the cagemates is ill, there is a chance your bird may be as well and you should be cautious about choosing a bird from that cage and environment.
