Hi. I'm Deborah and my cockatiel is Doodlebug. I found Doodle flying loose in June and have not been able to find his owners. He is a cock, normal grey split to pied and pearl (DallyTsuka taught me about his splits-- Hi Dally! <waves>). I have no idea how old he is. He has blossomed from a lost, apprehensive, grieving little foundling into an affectionate, brave and happy cockatiel. We still have issues to work on: he fears my hands except for step-ups; he won't eat any food that isn't dry and rock hard except for sprouts (and they still have to be pretty well-dried); he has not bathed in any way in the 4 months I've had him; and he gets terribly depressed when left alone-- to the extent that he eats very little and seldom plays unless I am with him. We are working together on these things and make a little more progress every day. I have never had a tame cockatiel before. He certainly is by far the most cooperative bird I have ever met, much less owned. Here is a pic of my handsome boy on our messy keyboard. Yes his play area is my desk. The little playgym is less than a foot away, but he chose his own special area between the keyboard and monitor and that's where his toys are. He's close enough to hop on me for a cuddle, and he can watch the monitor to see if anything interesting is happening there. This morning he tried to grab the kleenex when I cleaned up a dropping, so I gave him a piece of paper towel to play with. Attachments:

Thank you-- I think he is a lovely bird. Right now he's in his cage. I don't like to cage him when I'm home, but I think it's good for him to spend some time in his cage while I'm here. It's very hard-- he's running through all his vocalizations trying to coax me into letting him back out. What're you doin'; Gimme a kiss; Kisskisskiss; Gimme kisskiss; mumblemumbleBird! (his favorite phrase); two versions of the wolf whistle; over and over and OVER again. I keep telling him it's only for an hour and then he can come back out. It's for his own good but I feel sad locking him up when he could be out. as for splits, i can see whiteface in there too Cool-- my bird is a Heinz57 splits. How do you tell about the whiteface? This probably should go in another thread, but since you offered!-- How do I put more than one pic in a post? I couldn't figure it out.

If you look at his cheek, you can see the white edging just behind the red cheek patch thats how you can tell a whiteface split. Tsuka has it too Training them to like their cages can be hard.... my two chirp constantly to be let out in the morning and dont be quiet until i do lol so you arent alone there!

<----- Look, I have an avatar! Thanks DallyTsuka!
Yes, I can see the white edges, but didn't know it meant anything. What about this: do most tiels have some yellow feathers around their vents? Doodle has some. But his is the only cockatiel butt I've really ever looked at closely enough to notice feather color. I suppose it could be staining; but I think it is his feather color.

if you are talking about the little fuzzy yellow feathers, yes its normal, both dally and tsuka have them if a body feather is yellow on the belly, its an indication of split pied. this is an old photo of dally. shes got a stray yellow body feather on her belly as she is split pied, and you can see that circled. but if you look closely at her vent you can see the yellow feathering tsuka mooned the camera the other day so i got a decent one of the yellow feathers from him

It looks like Dally's vent. Except she has a long strip of yellow coloring at the level of her vent, but Doodle just has a little circle of yellow right around the vent. Hah! Finally got a picture. Doodle was not amused at my attempts to hold him up in the air and photograph his privates. This isn't very good but it shows the area of yellow. Attachments:
