I'd love to know why as well, I've never even heard of it.
my best guess would be some sort of follicle damage

He is very handsome!!! Every bird always needs a little work, that's what's so great about them!

DallyTsuka I agree-- I'm inclined to think he has had some sort of trauma to his tail in the past and has scarring or follicle damage. The vet couldn't find any signs, but the tail feather exam was very brief. What has really surprised me is that he molted his upside-down feathers, and then grew in two more the same way. I thought he would grow in normal feathers, but they came in weird again.
Hi cinnamonbits! Yes, it's been wonderful working with Doodle and seeing him settle in and adjust to his new home. He has made a lot of progress: learning to eat pellets and sprouted seeds, learning to play with toys, and learning to feel secure enough to explore his home. For the first couple of weeks he just sat on my shoulder and occasionally snuggled to my neck. Now he's into everything, especially stuff I don't want him to mess with-- just like a birdie should be!

i dont know if a visual exam can see minor follicle damage...
i dont know though if you should be concerned if theyre not bothering him in any way.

I'm positive he is not in pain, at least. His tail is the only part of his body he'll let me touch with my fingers, and we've worked up to him letting me stroke his tail feathers almost all the way up to his body. If he had any pain at all I don't think he'd let me do that. At some point I would like to have a very thorough exam by a cockatiel specialist-- just to solve the mystery. I don't mind if his feathers grow in sideways and polka-dotted, as long as he is healthy and happy! I am very curious, though, about what is going on.
