possibly blind ! (389 views)

hey everyone

i would like to get some help/advices on my lutino female tiel, i have noticed so many things that lead me to think that shes either blind or partially blind. and here are some cases that lead to thinking this way.

case 1 :
my lutino ( nunu ) is not able to fly like the rest of the tiels she tries to fly but she fails, sometimes she makes heart shaped wings looks up she bends then jumps attempting to fly but then she just falls back wards she tries over and over again but with no use, i have tried an advice from casey which is trying to let her fly close distances by placing a treat as a landing target it never worked she had no idea that the treat was there she instead puffed up and took a nap on my finger .


case 2:
when i let her and the other tiels out to walk around on the floor she seems to be heading the other way and not walk with the rest and then her mate al pacino would just call out and then she would follow and when she walks on the floor i noticed that she sticks her head up high and she looks lost she also looks confused and scared.


case 3:
whenever i play around with my tiels when their in the cage they tend to move a lot and fast, she'll be standing there with her crest spiked up as if shes scared and doesnt know whats going on unless i talk and she hears my voice thats when she knows that its me and she goes back to normal, i also put my finger infront of her and she wouldnt notice it till i touch her beak or any part of her body, the rest of the birds usually have pointy eyes when i put my finger right in front of them.



case 4:
i was feeding my tiels some millet last night and they were all eating out of my hand so i was calling out her name to come along and eat with the rest but she didnt, so after i was done with them i tried giving her some millet i actually had to put it in front of her and sorta touch her beak with it and thats when she realized there is millet and she started eating, but i also noticed something again here, when i was feeding the rest of the tiels they all had pointy cross eyes but when i was feeding her she she barely pointed her eyes most of the time she would look at it to know that its there or something and then she would just look straight !


case 5:
there is something weird about her eyes, i have posted a picture to show you guys what i mean



can you notice the white-ish gray-ish thing at the corner of her eye?

is this normal? i have never seen on my other birds before





so what do guys think ? do you think that shes blind or partially blind ?
i know that lutinos have been poorly bred and it leaded to many health issues.

i just wanna know your opinion and is there anything i can do to help her?

The white/grey thing is called Hounddog eye, it is a genetic defect and usually does not bother them.

So it sounds that she may be possibly blind. General tests you could do is wave a hand in front of her when she is looking to the side..birds will see this peripherally and will look forward toward the movement. If she steps up well and eagerly then you can put a finger in front of her without touching her..birds who step up eagerly will step up without your touch. And putting a favorite treat in front of her without touching her..if she can see it she will eat it.

Even if she is blind, she does have a good quality of life. To make things easy on her, keep the food bowls and water bowls in the same area when you arrange the cage. And I suggest you spend one on one time with her since she can't follow the flock well.

She never steps on my finger unless i touch her feet, but i will try the things u suggested, thanks <3

thank yooooou <3 a while ago i was thinking about what if she ended up somewhere else ! and they didnt take care of her and stuff i started crying, my little nunu <3
