Many bird owners hear the term "egg bum" or variations of this term. What is it? When a hen is due to lay an egg, her vent area swells. A few short hours before laying the egg, one might be able to feel the egg, however inexperienced people should not do this as it is easy to break the egg. However, if the egg is not laid, then this becomes an emergency. Eggs should be laid within roughly a week of an egg bum. Peritonitis and other infections can cause this swelling, which will grow and grow and this can kill your bird! Egg binding is another concern. If your bird stops pooping and is straining, this is an emergency! Here is a photo collage showing egg bum in birds:
