Lovebirds seem to most like the sweet little pet that is ideal for kids and amateurs. I must warn you however if you plan on buying these cute little birds for your kids--DON'T
Positive sides of a lovebird:
If kept single and aquired young and/or handfed the bird can be very cuddly and affectionate with its owner.
They are very entertaining.
Two bonded birds are very cuddly with eachother and are a joy to watch.
They're very playful.
FULL of personality!
Small size but big personality like a larger parrot!
Negative Sides to lovebirds:
Can be very hormonal.
Can be very nippy.
They are quite aggressive and often do not do well with other birds.
They have been known to kill eachother and other birds.
They pack a very strong bite.
They are stubborn.
If kept single, the bird needs a lot of attention.
Noisy and chattery and can have some ear ringing chirps.
Other things to know about lovebirds:
It is a myth that they need to be kept in pairs. Single birds do fine if they are given proper attention from their owners. They need a cage no smaller than 18 inches in any dimension for a single bird as they are very active. They are curious and get into trouble often. They make good pets for the right owner but I would be very cautious with them for kids as the bites from a lovebird break skin very easily.
Is a lovebird right for you?
Can you deal with constant noise all day long?
Can you deal with some biting and aggression?
Can you give 2 hours minimum of attention or out of cage time for your bird?
Lovebirds all in all make excellent pets, even with their crazy monster sides! It is never a dull moment with them around and they will entertain you for hours whether it is cuddling with you or a fellow bird or playing and beating up their toys!
