What is a travel cage? It is a smaller cage used for transport from point A to point B, or for while staying away. The size varies depending on species, but it should give your bird room to perch comfortably, eat/drink comfortably, and have a toy or two to play with. The base of the cage should be very secure, and doors should be able to close safely. If your travel cage has sliding doors, it might be advisable to use clips to lock them shut. Some birds are known escape artists! Travel cages can be used for taking your bird outside for some fresh air and sunlight on nice days, or for going for a walk if your bird will not accept a harness. It is ideal to have travel cages on hand for emergency use as well, such as for a hospital cage, transportation to a vet, or even to evacuate in case of emergency (gas leak, tornado, hurricane, earthquake, etc.). Because of these reasons, it might be best to keep it as lightweight as possible. Having it pre-set up is ideal as well so it already has your bird's necessities in it in case of evacuation! The cages should have a stable perch or two (depending on size of bird and cage) and at least 2 dishes for food and for water. These should be secured well in the cage. Here are examples of my travel cages below, just to give you an idea. This is my lovebirds' travel cage, it has everything they need, I plan on dividing it later but for now this is how it is set up. This is my cockatiels' travel cage. I have a seed guard around it.
