you may remember the 2 new rescues i got in december that came from not so great conditions. the were in quarantine for a little over a month and then february 2nd i finally got them out of the "troublesome" triple roof cage and put them in a smaller [temporary] cage. they were still pretty nervous and i was doing a little bit of my normal training with them.
after being inspired by bird tricks.com, i started clicker training them on friday the 14th. the next day i had them stepping up. i was truly amazed at the progress. now, only the 6th day of training them, i took them out! which is a huge step forward for all of us- the fastest i have trained is 4 months, and now i just trained 2 wild guys in 6 days.
Leo was the only one i was originally going to take out today.
a little bit about leo: he was one of the two first birds my friend got. he was always the more timid one and he has only come out twice in his life and wasn't really that tame when he did.
leo is now the star in this weeks training and even steps up onto my finger, but only in the cage. i too him out this morning, starting with the tabletop gym right next to their cage.
then, either he climbed up or i put him on top of his cage. i bought pickles over; she and baby bird will be their cage mates when i get a new flight cage.
i took him out and put him back several times. then i moved him to the cage top gym on my new flight cage. i took both pickles and baby bird over to see him. he warmed up to pickle some
pickles: "oh look at this cute boy who is just my type!"

leon: "pickles! how dare to talk to another boy! i am your true lover"
they are all so color coordinated!
and then we get to Ace.
a little about Ace: he was bought [on what seemed to be a whim] and he was never quarantined/ trained/ etc etc.
he was just as nervous as leo when i took them in. he is not as good with the training, but he turned out to be good enough to be able to come out (he was just looking to come out while leo was out!). he gets nervous in certain situations still and sometimes acts as if he can't see you or looks around nervously. he has been getting better.

now, before Ace ever came out, i decided to take leo onto the tree on one of his short out of cage 'training' sessions (he came out a LOT today). he did fine for his first time, a little nervous and baby bird was pecking at him which didn't really help…

annnnnddd… Ace's first time EVER out of the cage!!
and then i put them back for a while, and then took them out onto the cage top gym and let them stay out for the remaining 2 hours before it was time for everyone to go back. Ace was afraid of the mirror and then he got used to things. they eventually calmed down and preened and sat while i cleaned the cages. i again put pickles and baby bird with them. pickles sat with leo and baby bird sang to Ace, which he wasn't sure about tomorrow is a new day and i am so glad that they are now getting the well deserved freedom and love. i am sure that they will quickly come out of their shell!
