I'm glad he's coming along with his weaning and flying. he looks happy to be flying around.

he started eating seed earlier today and he rejected first morning's feeding!! hes been chowing down on the seed, pellets and bugs all day today and hes really happy to eat seed!!

my neighbors have found a sparrow and they have thought to give him to me;
Casey, how many times do you feed him?
what is the right frequence between two consecutive meal?

he looks like he is 2-3 weeks old, so feed until he stops begging for food every 2 hours during the day, you dont have to feed him at night

he needs a special formula since he is an insect eater.

he needs:

soaked cat food
applesauce (i used cranberries instead)
boiled egg
avian vitamins ( i ground up mineral block)


mash all of this up into a fine mash and feed him with a popsicle stick every 2 hours.

try not to handle him, keep his cage as natural as possible. he is old enough to start introducing live bugs to and seed. give some spray millet for him in the cage. i dont know if it is legal to keep house sparrows in Italy as they are native to Europe but they are not native here in Canada so its legal for us to keep them as pets.

parrot handfeeding formula is not good enough for them, it doesnt have the amount of protein they need and they will grow weaker on it, cat food has high protein they need since their parents feed them an all insect diet when they are babies. try to offer live insects too.

today he was ready. we could see it in his face, he kept trying to escape his cage (succeeded today) he was eating on his own rejecting feedings, afraid of us.... we gave him the choice. he took one last look at us and was gone. it felt good to watch him fly free


















i know it was a bit early than we expected, but we could all see it, he was ready. and its the perfect time for him. the weather is going to be very good for the next week, the fish flies are starting to come out (they only last a few months) so it gives him easy meals while he will adjust to the outdoor world. hes got our bird feeders up for him, its the perfect time for him and he has the best chances now. and you could see it in his face, he wanted that freedom, and in the end, he got what he deserved. he was meant to fly free.

Glad to see that your sparrow has had its freedom;
I hope God will always keep an eye on him, so the sparrow will can face easier the hidden dangers inside to the nature;
As for my sparrow, I have given back it to my neighbor, for the reason that I can't take care of it in this period;
I'm working more than 9 hours per day; so if I had cared it would certainly have died;
I have explained at my neighbor how he has to grow the sparrow and I hope he will be able to rescue it.
